Writing

About Jean the writer...

Jean has been writing ever since she first had materials to do so.  At age seven she entertained herself by writing poems on thin strips of colored paper. An early love-affair with words has continued as an ongoing passion.

A member of Denver Woman’s Press Club, the Poetry Society of Colorado, and Castle Rock Writers, Jean currently writes mostly nonfiction and poetry.

A memoir, In Search of the Owl: A Father’s Death Begins a Quest for a Deeper Understanding…of Life, (see below) has received excellent reviews. Whether experiencing grief or not, readers find that the author’s descriptions of her serendipitous encounters with nature offer comfort as well as food for thought.

Her submissions to the Poetry Society of Colorado have garnered countless awards. In 2022 the Colorado Hearts and Minds poetry contest chose Jean’s poem, “Incense,” as the Grand Prize Winner, with an award of $400. Her work has appeared in Quill and Parchment, Colorado Life magazine, Poetry Society of Colorado’s Poet’s Showcase: Winning Poems 2018-19, and numerous anthologies.

Her new book...

In Search of the Owl
A Father’s Death Begins a Quest for a Deeper Understanding… of Life In Search of the Owl Book Cover

This moving memoir was written during the first year after the death of her father, Levi L. Mohler.  He was a pioneer in the fields of wildlife management and ecology, someone who respected nature and understood the importance of the complex ecosystem upon which all living things depend. So, it was no surprise that Jean turned to nature for solace during her time of grief. As she made her way from season to season her thought-provoking encounters with nature became key elements in her search for the owl, a metaphor for her search for wisdom relative to the mystery of life and death. The graphite and ink illustrations are hers.
